Septimus Heap
Syren is so far my favorite book in the Septimus Heap series. I like it because it is filled to the brim with descriptive detail and non-stop adventure. At 610 pages plus eighteen as a part of "Histories and Happenings" I would recommend it to a reader who loves adventure, hates the boring parts, and has plenty of time to read.
The main character Septimus Heap is an apprentice to the Extra-Ordinary Wizard. He is roughly twelve years old with a head of curly blond hair, a ruffled apprentice tunic with grubby Senior apprentice cuffs on the sleeves. Septimus is typically a friendly, laid back type of person, but when faced with danger he kicks it into gear with his past knowledge of the Young Army. Septimus is a rare type of Apprentice. He is the only apprentice who has been picked for the Queste and returned from it alive, earning him the rank of Senior Apprentice. He also is best friends with Beetle, the ex-chief scribe of the Manuscriptorium.
Syren is about Septmus trying to bring his friends back home but they refuse to join him. They would rather stay with Milo, Jenna's adoptive father, on his beautiful ship. Eventually Jenna and Beetle agree to go with Septimus. Soon Spitfyre, Septimus' dragon, gets hit by lightning and the trio get stranded on a beautiful and uninhabited (or so they thought) island and must survive. The story's midsection revolves around Septimus treating his dragons wound and Jenna and Beetle finding a little adventure of their own. Eventually the boat Septimus' other friends and brother are on gets stranded on the Isle of Syren too.
